Violet Oakley was the first professional female artist in the United States. Her rendering of The Heavenly Host (1901) representes a breakthrough in equality for women's rights. Later, she acheived fame through her decoration of Pennsylvania's state assembly. She was also a lesbian who lived openly with her partner in what was in those days called a "Boston Marriage".
